Do You Know Who Van Gogh Is? by Uchenna Ani-Okoye
Although he was unrecognised for a large part of his life time, Van Gogh believed in himself and his own ability. His short years (only 37) on this planet were without a doubt not easygoing or pleasant as he was a very depressed individual. But if we look at his body or self portraits, it tells us that knew, accepted and loved him as much at the friends and the peasants he portrayed in his art work.
"I should like to do portraits which will appear as revelations to people in a hundred years' time."
Vincent Van Gogh coined those words in the year of 1890, that's more than a century ago, in a letter he wrote to his sister. This artist has ultimately captured the souls of those seeking accuracy and beauty in our time, and, although he wasn't widely accepted during his own life time, Van Gogh is without a doubt an artistic immortal.
It took him a relatively long time before other people began seeking his work although many of such people are disappointed with his work most notably his uncle. Regardless of this, Van Gogh continued on with his work and mastered many different styles. Some of which were criticised during his time period but today are considered masterpieces. These criticisms he received are what made him decide to turn to oil paintings.
Van Gogh's personally manner underwent a drastic change at this time, turn away from the darker pallet of his earlier work such as The Potato Eaters. Instead, he began to apply the short, thick brushstrokes, and bright, intense colours for which he is most well known today. It was only then, in the last four years of his life, that he created the bulk of his body of work, over 200 paintings.
In 1886 Van Gogh linked his brother Theo in Paris, with whom he had maintained a habitue correspondence throughout his earlier life. It was here that he seriously attached himself to art, and studied at the studio of Fernand Cormon, and encountered Impressionistic artists such as Gaugin, Monet, and Pissarro.
When Van Gogh was young he used primarily water colours although finding a water semblance by Van Gogh is pretty challenging. His youth didn't consist primarily of art, but his grownup life did. Around the 1880s Van Gogh took it upon himself to make artistry his life.
Van Gogh's painting called 'Bedroom at Arles' which was created in 1889, was intended to be a creation of a restful place. A look at this art piece, with its vibrant vigour filled with many oddities, gives the viewer the complete opposite sensation.
The room, though pleasant, all but reels with movement. Whether consciously or not, van Gogh painted the perspective, walls and decorations all atilt, so that we get the belief of a ship's cabin in a stormy sea, strangely, the two chairs both face toward the bulky wooden bed, and the furniture blocks the two Lavender doors. Paintings on the wall jut into the room as if virtually ready to fall off, and the walls themselves are not square.
