Avoid Compensation in Golf by Keith Baxter

While people who are not golfers may often mistakenly take golf for a simple game, as you and I both know, there is a lot more to golf than merely getting the ball into the hole. To be a good golfer, there are numerous things you must do. You must understand the layout of the course, have the ability to retain your mental edge while exerting yourself physically, be in good physical condition, and perhaps most importantly, have an understanding of the golf swing. While there is a lot that goes into each of these things, the golf swing is probably the most complex part of the game of golf and the most difficult part of the game to master. To have good golf swing mechanics, you must first learn golf swing basics. Without an understanding of the basics, it is impossible to make golf swing improvements. And while it would be nice if reading an article on the proper golf swing could really improve your game, the truth is that golf swing mechanics are learned in lessons and on the driving range. All of the golf swing aids and books on golf swing technique will avail you nothing in comparison to a golf lesson and an hour at the driving range. The thing about golf is that the longer you practice without any formal instruction, the more likely you are to develop bad habits. It is often the case that when people try to teach themselves golf, and then later decide that they should take lessons, they have to go backwards before making any real progress. That is to say, they have to unlearn bad habits before learning new ones, and this is generally much more difficult than beginning the learning process by taking some lessons. Most of the time, the bad habits that golfers pick up are to compensate for a flaw in their swing. For example, to correct a slice caused from an incorrect golf swing plane, a beginner golfer may compensate by flipping his wrists at impact. Now, the ball may fly straighter, but the flawed golf swing remains, plus the additional problem of flipping the wrists. So when the time comes that this golfer wants to take his game to the next level, he will have to not only adjust his golf swing plane, but also learn how to swing the golf club without flipping his wrists. And unlearning the wrist-flipping could be more difficult than making adjustments to his golf swing plane. Before making any golf swing improvements, it is important that golfers have proper golf swing mechanics mastered. By compensating for poor golf swing technique, golfers only create future problems. Outside of formal lessons, the best way to avoid this pitfall is by taking in as much information as possible about proper golf swing mechanics.
